From February 1972 cars destined for North America were
required to have a model year identifier as part of their
chassis number. This allowed authorities to identify which
emissions standard the car should adhere to. In response to
this Jaguar added a prefix to their chassis numbers of 'U'
which presumably stood for United States and then a second
character that moved through the alphabet as the year
changed. For the 2 door XJ the following prefixes are
applicable.
| Prefix |

| UF |

1977 |
Engine numbers for both the straight 6 and V12 comprised of
three parts. The prefix denoted the vehicle model the engine
was built for, or perhaps assigned to. This was followed by
a sequential serial number. The suffix gave the engine's
compression ratio and on the V12 a second letter gave the
piston and liner grade, either A or B. A grade liners are
0.001" smaller with a diameter of 3.543" versus the 3.544"
of grade B.
